Setting up 18 R.O plants for clean, potable drinking water

Setting up 18 R.O plants for clean, potable drinking water

Health

The Foundation has taken a conscious decision for setting up RO plants for clean, potable drinking water. The need for this came forth during one of the NSS camps conducted in Chandgiri village, where the villagers shared their experience about many people falling ill and suffering from diseases caused by E. coli and other bacteria. The reason for the development of these diseases was figured out to be the contaminated water which was not suitable for drinking.

The Foundation felt the need for making some provisions for getting potable drinking water not just in Chandgiri but for other villages as well which might be facing similar problems. The Foundation has till date established 18 R.O. plants, out of which 17 R.O plants are in Nashik and 1 R.O. plant is at Aurangabad.

The Foundation has set up 17 RO plants so far in and around Nashik district in conjunction with Gram Panchayats through which nearly 10,000 families and approximately 1,00,000 people are getting an access to safe potable water. A 7 step procedure is followed for coming to a decision of installing the RO plant which starts with making a pre-installation visit to the village, assessing the water quality of the village to check for the amount of total dissolved solids, the number of households and beneficiaries and 12 months availability of the water. Basic infrastructure is to be provided by the Gram Panchayat. In addition, at least 50% of the households have to subscribe to the water withdrawal cards. We also see the proactiveness of the Gram Panchayat before installing the RO plant as the post-installation maintenance beginning after one year is to be done by them. After studying all these parameters, then the decision is taken to install the RO plant. The Foundation is a pioneer to introduce a novel concept of ‘Subscription of Water Withdrawal Card’ (on the lines of bank ATM) for running these R.O. plants. The income generated through this is up to Rs. 1,00,000/- per month, which is used by the Gram Panchayat for constructive activities such as solar street lights, opening and running a library, making necessary provisions in the schools and for maintenance of the RO plant etc.

The Foundation has also installed one R.O. plant at Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University, Aurangabad.
The impact of this is seen in the villagers developing a healthy lifestyle, decrease in illnesses within the village and moving towards economic sustainability as per the feedback received from the Gram Panchayats. The State government has taken due cognizance of this and included RO installation as one of the missions of the District Development Plan, for providing safe drinking water for all.
