Success Story of Jakhori village

Success Story of Jakhori village

Sustainable village development

The Foundation is working closely with the Gram-Panchayat at Jakhori village in Nashik for sustainable village development. In this village also, the Foundation has planted almost 9000 trees of 12 different indigenous varieties in almost 31 acres of land.

The beginning of this story goes back to the time of installation of a R.O. plant by Jayam Foundation at Jakhori village. The Foundation introduced a novel concept of ‘Subscription of Water Withdrawal Card’ (on the lines of bank ATM) for running this R.O. plant. The villagers got an access to safe, potable drinking water and the income generated through the running of this R.O. plant was decided to be used for taking up some constructive activities. With this positive thought, a group of young and dynamic individuals who belonged to this village, decided to work together for a noble cause of working for the development of the village, which had given so much to them. The inspiration for this came from setting up of the R.O. plant by the Foundation and how it turned out to help in the economy of the village. This group started working with setting up of a library in the village, which was named as ‘Vichar Kranti’. This library helped the children and others in the village take up reading, which in turn helped in developing their general knowledge. This motivated the group to organize a state-level elocution competition for the students, which received an overwhelming response from all over Maharashtra and this continues till date as an annual event each year.

The group along with the Gram Panchayat of Jakhori village then decided to take steps for making the village greener by planting trees, which was named as ‘Van Kranti’, thereby contributing in environmental conservation. For this plantation, an empty space of 31 acres was allocated by the Gram Panchayat. With this thought, they approached Jayam Foundation for supporting the plantation. The Foundation planted nearly 12 types of fruit saplings such as Tamarind, Jack fruit, Mango, Custard Apple, Amla, Drumstick etc. trees across 31 acres of land and the villagers took care of these plants even during the lockdown. Proper compounding of this land and arranging for the water source was also done by Jayam Foundation.

With persistent efforts from the villagers along with encouragement from Jayam Foundation, Jakhori village has become a role model for other nearby villages to emulate its success story.
